AB OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of HIV infection in
homo/bisexual males in a public STD clinic, and the possible
modifications of the risk behaviors. METHODS: From 01.10.89 through
31.12.93 we have collected data on all homo/bisexual males who consulted
in the STD clinic. HIV testing and counseling was offered. We analyze
rish behaviors, condom use, HIV testing and results in these five years.
RESULTS: We attended 820 consultations of 577 homo/bisexuals males.
13.9% refused the practice HIV test. The overall HIV seroprevalence was
8.5%, 12/184 clients seroconverted during this period (6.5/100
persons/year). Unsafe sex predicted HIV infection (OR = 2.14,95%
CI:1.07-4.37). TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. CONCLUSIONS: The HIV
seroprevalence in homosexual males in the South of Spain is lower than
in others european countries. Changes in the risk behaviors have been
reached, but it's necessary to maintain preventive interventions in this
population.
